Bizarre install question....

Removed old G2 vid card from a buddies computer. Un-installed drivers first. Installed a G3 Ti200 and it won't install the drivers for it. I've tried every means possible. It keeps coming up saying it cant install the drivers. Went through MS update and tried those drivers also. It still wouldn't update.

Any body run into this? Everything was fine prior to trying all this.

Does it say anything else in the error?

When you go the the properties of the device in Device Manager, what does it say?

Maybe you should install the GF2 again and use one of the "nVidia driver removers" ... the regular uninstall doesn't work too well apparently.

Yeah it shows up in the DM. I've tried installing the drivers every way possible from the DM too.

I haven't tried re-installing the G2 card. I'll try that.

If it's in DM, are you sure the drivers aren't installed. Or did you just try to go to device properties and use update driver?

Here's more of what was going on... His OS was originally 98SE. He got XP home and did the update last summer.

I would install a set of drivers for the vid card then I would rebbot. When it would reboot, it would come up with the found new hardware balloon and then it wouldn't install the vid card drivers for the device. If you told it to search, it would not find the drivers. If you told it a specific place it would find them, attempt to install them, then say it can not install the drivers. As for the DM, the device was there (Vid Card), but it had the question mark. We tried a old PCI vid card and it did the same exact thing. I tried installing a nic card, and it did the same. Nothing wanted to install. If we plugged in a USB device, that would install fine. It was weird. He ended up backing everything up and we did a fresh install of XP Home. He hasn't installed anything other than USB devices since he did the XP Home upgrade. This was the first attempt. I'm thinking maybe the XP Home upgrade messed things up. I dunno. I know there have been issues doing just the upgrade in the past. Who knows.

Thanks for all the help though.

Have u thought of going back 2 win98SE (or win2000, I hear it's better than winxp), & try installing the vid card drivers then? Know it sounds lame, but it might work if ur not set on using winxp.

Did you revert to "standard VGA" in display properties after you removed drivers from the old card before shutting down?

Did you write zeros to the drive before you did the clean install?
