How to retrive Dos data on XP system?

I need to retrieve the data on a hard drive from an old dos system. Can I connect it to a system using windows XP? Will it be able to read the data? Is there any possibility that the data on the dos disk will be corrupted?

Im not positive but I believe older DOS systems used FAT16 file system, which XP should be able to read fine

As long as the drive is an ide drive i think you should have no problem. Early HDD are not compatible with current ide ones i dont think. And obviously that you have a spare ide channel on your system.

Welcome to TechIMO, sfdavid.

As long as it's an IDE HDD, and the DOS partition isn't compressed or something, it should be able to be easily read by an XP partition. Bear in mind the DOS commands and apps probably won't work in XP, but the data will be readable.

Let us know how it goes, and if you have any further problems. We like to see how ppl get on.

Cheers
Mick
