administrator access vs administrator group

I have a PC running XP sp1. I am the only user. I have two accounts on the PC - Administrator (rarely used) and Dan (always used). I made Dan part of the administrator's group. No problem until I tried to install Real Player (free version) on my PC. When I tried as Dan I received the message that "you do not have administrator access to the windows registry please have your adminstrator install the software". So I signed on as administrator, installed the software, tested it and it ran fine. I signed on as Dan. I tried the software and it told me the configuration was not complete and went to the Real site where I had to register. Didn't like that - but, what the heck, it's free. The install ran for 10 minutes and then said that there was no disk space in my library database so it had to stop. Huh? Went to the Real site and there was no explanation for this message. I have over 30 gbs left on my PC. Went back to Administrator and everything was RealOne Player ran fine.

What I want to do is install RealOne player as Dan. I thought being a member of the Adminstrator's group gave you the same access as an administrator. I guess not. So how do I grant Dan Administrator Access to the registry???

Thanks

ahhh another fellow inside the loop

Hmmm it maybe something funky in your registry.

You can try running regedt32 and check permissions to make sure "Dan" isn't denied any rights for some bizarre reason. (Note: You can not modify/check permissions on the registry from regedit)

It maybe a bug in the installer as well.
Are you trying to install on a network drive or anythign funky like that?

oh and thanks for the wise words US
maybe try helping the problem?

Problem is fixed

Thank you vass0922.

For some reason there were registry keys left over from version 6.0 (wonder how old those were???) that would not allow me access so I changed ownership and killed them. Serves them right! Seriously, once the keys were removed the installation went fine.

Stange message though - it implies that I have missing permissions on the whole registry not just that one key.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who took the time to read and think about my problem.

Dan
