Systems heatsink fans

Hi all, I bought a coolmaster coper heatsink fan about a couple of months ago. I fitted it ok and it worked ok. Then the computer would not bootup. I took it to my local computer shop and when he looked at it he said I put to much themial cell on. Can you put to much on? If you can't put to much on will it blow the processer and motherboad.

Pancho.

Yes u can put to much on.. and if it is Arctic Silver it could short out the cpu.. so u have to be careful.. only put on the amount the instructions tell you to.. more is not better in this case..

thermal goop is meant to be paper thin and only applied to the small square die in the center of the CPU. It is only meant to fill in the nearly microscopic scratches and imperfections between the cpu and heatsink.
If it squirts out over the Cpu surface it can short connections and/or insulate the chip as well.
My method for applying the "goop" is to place a small amount on the chip, smear it on with a credit card or edge of something similar, to a very thin consistancy and then wipe the excess off on the center of the Heatsink using my finger to rub into surface and wiping off all excess. Make sure it is seated correctly too...make sure the "step" lines up with the step on the cpu holder.

I don't think you even need a paper thin layer, less than that.
I put a little bit on, and when my cpu came off, there was a ton squished to the sides of my cpu, and barely any on the die, although my HSF is lapped to 1000 grit sandpaper.

you want enough to cover the CPUs core, at least...or else you'll have EXTREMELY poor contact between the core and HS, resulting in high temperatures if nothing else...it also acts as a type of padding, so your HS doesn't crush or damage the CPU...that's the same reason you don't shift the heatsink once it's layed on the CPU.

I've heard you can buy a pad instead of the gell. Can you use it instead.
