Here's a good diagram

http://gccprinters.com/support/doc/crossover.html

Where it says OPEN, it means it really doesn't matter what you put in there as Ethernet only uses 4 of the wires anyways.

I tried this once on a coupler and messed it up... haven't had the time to try it again but here's a few links that may help:

Do you think I can make a Non-Crossover cable into a Crosso-over cable?
I'm talking about one that is pre-made, clipping it and changing the wires.

Yes you can buzioid, but make sure you have a new clip for the end.. they are not re-usable.

You can also make a crossover into a straight through (non-crossover) cable.. its simply re-ordering the wires.

Straight through cable is easier.. just make sure the wires are in the same order on both sides.

hmm...i did the switch, a regular straight cable to a crossover cable, however, it doesnt seem to be working...do you have to solder these wires or are they similar to speaker wire (i.e. a quick twist of the bare wire and theyre good to go)?

Check your wires again, soldering would make it more secure, but you don't neccissarilly have to do it, a quick and TIGHT twist should do the job just fine.

When you say doens't seem to be working what do you mean? The two computers can't ping each other?

I'm just trying to figure out if you have a problem with your cable or your hardware configuration. My apologizes if you're an old hand and this question is insulting to you.
