can't install peanut linux!
ok, so i'm trying to install peanut linux on a very old 200mhz machine but i'm having problems.
first of all i know the .iso cd is good, i've checked it and even made copies just to make sure. after the installer format's (i chose ext3) the harddrive it starts to install, but once it gets to around 73% the screen goes black. everything still runs, the cd keeps spinning and blinking, etc. but the screen is just black! i tried leaving it to see if it was just a temporary thing but it still stayed like that after an hour or two. can anyone tell me what's going on?

I sense a download of Mandrake is in order...
Although I have never used Peanut Linux, it sounds like a smaller distro that probably doesn't have the greatest user-freindliness in the world. But of course, what do I know?

to run mandrake on that machine you might experience the feeling you had when you were a kid playing candy land and you got stuck in molasses swamp. but hey.......i ran windows 2000 on a p2 266 so i cant say anything. personally i love mandrake and would give it a shot myself with that machine. i would put as much ram in it as possible though since its cheap too.
i had the same problem with peanut linux and gave up on it. you might want to check out evil entity linux or even knoppix which i believe you can run off the cd and not have to install it.

yeah i've got knoppix but its just too darn slow, and i want to actually install a distro in this 2 gig hard drive. i have 128 megs of ram, which is a lot to go with this 200mhz Pentium.
i really want to figure this out if anyone knows whats up...i also have tried vector linux and it does the same thing!

hmmm, happened on other distros too? can you try some different ram or try installing with one stick? seems like it could be something hardware related.

I had that happen while trying to install Gentoo but all I had to do was hit the "Any" key on the keyboard.I'm sure you tried that, though.

Some points/questions:
The screen going blank is caused by the powersaving feature which is written in the install script. But it shouldn't bother the installation.
Do you have enough free HD space? Peanut 9.5 needs at LEAST 1.5 g. Personally, I'd use ext2 or reiserfs, not ext3.
How much mem? 64MB is the BARE min.
Did you run the Peanut.bz2 check during the first part of install? Was it OK?
Let the install preceed as before until ALL HD/CDrom activity has ceased -- may be a long time. Look at your activity lights. Then hit the escape or space key. Does it come up? You could jiggle the mouse alittle to keep the powersaving from occuring & then perhaps get an error message.

ok BFlurie, you win. I went and hit the space bar and poof the screen comes up and starts to finish with the rest of the installation. Thanks for making me feel like an idiot!
