Radeon 9700 Pro, or Geforce 4 ti4600?

It's a tough call, they both seem comparable performance wise...

Isn't the 9700 the most direct X compatable with the upcoming Half life 2 and Doom 3?

My computer originally came from Alienware with a geforce 3 ti500, so would I have to factor in that my existing mobo/chipset would be the most compatable with another nvidia card?

The 9700 will run Doom3 and HL2 much better then a GF4 because it supports Direct X 9 features like Pixel Shader v2.

Also what's your cpu and memory, that may also need upgrading to get the best out of the card.

AMD Athlon XP 1900+

512 RAM, PC2100

Yes, they both need to be upgraded....

But the only reason I am upgrading the video card at this moment is because I'm installing watercooling, and I don't want to waste money on a G3 waterblock when I will have to upgrade to a new card in the future.

the motherboard will be the biggest thing that may need to be upgraded to really take advantage of the card

As far as I know I dont think a 1900+ and 512 mb of ram with a 9700 should have to much trouble running Doom3 or Half Life 2. But then again, more speed is always good

ZeroAce the 9700pro is faster than the ti4600 and will run future games much better than the ti. I have a 9700pro and have had nothing but pleasure from it.

Hey I have a Radeon 9700pro

If you look any and every website that does benchmark comparisons you will see the 9700pro beats the 4600ti in I think every test. Maybe 1 or 2 they are tied but the 9700 pro is only beat by the 9800 and the new fx5800 and 5900 cards. Even then you only get an extra 3 - 15 frames per sec for a card that cost $100 mores... You can powerstrip your radeon and pic up a few frames 2, but really not necesary.

Hope that helps..
