AMD Horror Stories
I've been browsing the forums lately (as I'm building a computer soon) and I've come across some people who's heatsinks have blown off and the chip fried. I am getting a P4 3.0 Ghz 800fsb, if the heatsink/fan somehow falls off or whatever, will the chip fry? I watched that video from Tom's Hardware that compares the chips without heatsink/fans, and the Pentiums just seemed to slow performance alot, but no CPU damage.
Another thing. I bought the retail CPU. Should I attach the heatsink/fan to the CPU using the stickpad thing that comes with it, or go buy some kind of other adhesive? Thanks.

Honestly, if the heatsink falls off you didn't do a very good job at ALL of putting it on.
You should avoid that crap on the bottom of the heatsink...take it off with a razor blade and put some Arctic Silver 3?

I've never had a HSF fall off one of my AMD's. I doubt it would happen if the clip is attached properly. Perhaps if someone ordered a prebuilt system and the shipper was extremely rough with it.
The stickpad you're refering to is a poor replacement for heatsink compound. You can use the pad but you would get better performance from a quality heatsink compound like Artic Silver.

The problem with Artic Silver is (last I heard) it voids the warranty.

Also, what would I use to measure the temperature of the CPU?

Most CPU's come with a builtin temperature sensor, so you just need software that can pull out that information.
A good BIOS will also allow you to see the current temp of the CPU.
SiSoft Sandra will get this information for you (system temp) and a number of other utilities.
With my MSI board I got a copy of PC Alert 4 that does it for me.

Although I still recommend Arctic Silver III, just remember that theirs a new sherrif in town: Nanotherm Silver XTC. Seems like I saw a comparison here on TechIMO, but can't seem to find the link....
Conspiracy?

Conspiracy? | Arctic Silver is from a reliable, experienced company...I trust them.

So does this Arctic Silver really do that much?
I have built dozens of pc's using all types of cpu, I have always used the pad that comes with the hsf, would scrapping that off and replacing it with something else drop the cpu temps by much? and how much?
I have never really had any problem with cpu temps other than the temp of my office which was 40-45c before I got an ac unit, cpu temps would hit 65c under load (running FAD). Now the ambient air is lower (20-23c), cpu temps are now around 47c.

It dropped the temperatures on my old 1800+ 6c+ from Arctic Silver 2 ... and has kept my 2600+ well below 40c
