Kids Upgrading Motherboard for COMPAq 5000T

Hello

I just wonder if there is any way to upgrade my COMPAQ 5000T - P-III-800 MHz to a
P-IV. I will, of course, have to get a new motherboard but I don't know where I can buy COMPAQ motherboards.

Many thanks

Ed

Do you have a digital camera that you can use to take a picture of the back of the case?

Most older HP/Compaq machines had proprietary boards in them. In other words, they didn't fit the same standard as everybody else.

If the board is of the standard ATX or uATX, then it will be easy to install a new one. You don't have to get a "Compaq" branded board.

I downloaded one of the manuals for your 500T, but it doesn't specify if it's a standard size or not. I'm gonna root around on Compaq's site some more to see.

Yeah, just turn the case around so we can see the back where you plug in the mouse and stuff like that. That will give a good idea of what form factor it is.

If you feel gutsy you could take the case off and take a snapshot of the inside as well. Just a straigh-on shot of the motherboard down inside the case.

Just the back should give a good idea of what form it is though. Don't take the case off if you don't feel comfortable doing it.

Will you be upgaded yourself or having a PC store do it? I sure it can be done but most companys like Compaq make it hard to upgrade. I would suggest in buying a barebones system and adding your ram, hard drive etc. Also complete systems are getting cheaper nowadays. If you know a little about PC's i would build one yourself. Alot of the parts you have now can be reused.
Thats what i did. Went from a Compaq to one that I built myself. Was really not that hard.

Yeah, I had to search throuh their FTP to get the one.

Go here and d/l the "198672-001 Sys Board.pdf" one.

And just to note, I have an old HP Pavillion that had a 266MMX in it. that has been upgraded to a dual PIII/933. The case was fine for a dually mobo and has plenty of room.

That's why I requested the pics of the inside as well to see what sorta space we were looking at.

If you're having trouble uploading the pics, just PM me and I'll send you my e-mail.

Cool. That looks like a standard uATX mobo.

Looks like you have 2 NIC's, a modem, and a SCSI card as well.

Do you want onboard video and stuff like that?
