Winodws XP and Mandrake on same system??
hey guys
I am looking at trying out Mandrake. But i dont have another pc to load it on. Also i want to have XP too. So i am wondering if i can have Mandrake and windows xp on the same system?? Please tell me what i need to do to make this work. Or tell me if it is not a good decision to put them both on one system.
thanks
ricky

u dont need much to have them on the same system
u just need a big harddisk (20 GB would be more than enuf).
its certainly not a bad decision to try out Mandrake.
i'd say install XP first, then install Mandrake. You will have to partition your system to install Mandrake. Mandrake 9 comes with a great partitioning utility I am told. so u dont need to worry about a separate partitioning tool.
on the same note, what is ur computer specs? XP doesnt perform too well with 128MB RAM. The more RAM u have, the better it is for XP.

yes you can.
You've already got XP installed, now you'll just have to boot up into mandrake installer. Warning: Make sure you do some reading on 'dual booting' before proceeding. If you go through the install half arsed you could end up formatting your drive including XP. Linux does NOT use the same filesystem as Windows XP so you'll need to UN partition space from XP or have a completely seperate HD.
If you wish, check out Knoppix for a trial run on linux that doesn't require installation. http://www.knoppix.org/ you download it, burn it to a cd and you boot up to the cd but nothing is installed the local drive.

I've got the same setup, d00d. Actually I have Win98, WinXP, and Mandrake all installed. You just need some empty space (partitioned or unpartitioned) on your hard disk for Mandrake. Like nishark mentioned, Drake has a partitioning tool that's very easy to setup your hard disk.
If you have some unpartitoned space available, the Drake install will set up a Linux partition for you. If XP has invaded your whole hard disk, the Drake install will resize a FAT32 or NTFS Windows partition for you to make room for Linux. Piece of cake!
Mike EDIT: If you would like to read a little before you start you can find Mandrake 9.1 documentation HERE . Have fun and learn something at the same time.

another thing i should mention, if u want 'write' access to ur XP partition from ur Mandrake partition, then i reckon installing XP on a FAT32 partition instead of NTFS is a good idea.

| Yep, the D00D is correct. Or if you have room you can have XP on NTFS, a FAT32 partition to save you work to, and a Linux partition (which can read/write to FAT32).
