Hard Drive repair...?

So I, being the clumsy person I am, managed to fry my new hard drive. At least I think I did. Basically, what happens when I put it in is the BIOS runs until the "detecting IDE drives" part (i.e. not veyr far at all) and then hangs at that point. It is definitely my hard drive since I am currently on my old HD and it works perfectly. Anyway, I was thinking that perhaps I may just have short circuited the power, rather than destroyed the whole thing (wishful thinking, eh? :P). I know it's quite a vague description of what is wrong, but its the best I can do.

My question is two fold: A) Is it possible that I may just have fried the power source for the HD, rather than the whole drive itself and B) if it is just the power, would it be possible to repair?

Edit: If it is any help, it's a Western Digital Caviar 80GB Specal Edition.

I'll probably take it to a computer store t get it checked nonetheless, but I thought I'd ask here as well .

It is probably not the drive. I'm sure you will get some responses, but possibilities are:
Your bios does not support 80GB drive
Jumper not set correctly.
Not using the correct cable (are you using an 80wire cable?)

I was using it before and it worked perfectly (I've a load of files on it that I'd rather not lose, but meh). And then I needed to plug a second hard drive in (an operation I've done a thousand and one times - no idea why I messed up this time) and when I tried rebooting it got to the "detecting IDE drives" and stopped. My old hard drive works (I'm using it now), so I cna only assume it is the HD.

Well, have you tried to reset your BIOS?

Right, I feel like a bit of a fool now. Apologies to chapmc - it seems that I had put the ribbon cable in the wrong way round .

Thanks anyway.

That's how you learn. Unforunately I think part of working in this field is learning to say you don't know something or know how something works and still keep your credibility with your clientele intact.
