Do I really need 128MB?

Hi all!

Previously, I asked for some advice on a good video card to buy. I mainly surf the web and play games occasionally. My wife uses digital pictures in her business, but usually doesn't manipulate them or do anything that requires any unusual horsepower.

I've got an MSI KT Ultra 2 motherboard with 256 MB ram and a 1700+ processor. I'm going to buy a ti4200 card (probably an MSI), and I'm wondering whether I really need 128MB or whether 64MB will do. (I realize that having additional capability is never a bad thing.)

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Dana

For the extra money, go for the 128. People will undoubtedly come here and tell you that the memory on the 128mb version runs slower than on the 64 mb version, but I will tell you that I haven't seen a 128mb version of this card that couldn't run the memory at the full 250mhz DDR that the 64 mb version runs at. Most of the memory chips on these cards are rated to run at that speed, and are underclocked to begin with.

Earlier at Newegg, I saw a refurbished Ti4400 for $110.

At compgeeks they have a refurbished Ti4400 and Ti4600 for $100 and $140, respectively.

I think for the little difference there really is in money I would go with the 128MB. You might not need it now but twice the memory leaves a of alot of room for expandability.

i dont reckon ya need the 128mb card.. as your cpu is only 1.47ghz.. and your not a hardcore gamer. and yeah, according to bench's, the 64's are faster.. until they get a game that needs huge memory etc.

but if its only a few bucks, get the 128.

it should be ok in games, except for high resolutions.

my gf's computer is a 2000+ with 512MB DDR333 and a GF4 mx440. its run almost anything at 1024x768 and below. above that its pretty poor.

I would go with the extra memory, it will be useful for future games if not now.
