120mm Fan? Good or Bad?

I been going ape crazy trying to lower the temperature of my rig. By adding 2 case fans, replacing the CPU heatsink & fan, a new PS with dual fans, and finally adding heatsinks onto my vid card and memory, I have managed to lower the temp to approximately 48-56 C. I am attempting to cut out the side of my case and add either 2 80mm fans drawing heat away from the cpu or one giant 120mm fan. Question: Would it have a significant impact on my temps, and would it be operating quietly? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated!

With all the money you spend on fans, why not just buy an aluminum case and let that drive your temperatures down.

also, you have to find the right combination of intake/exhaust fans... for my computer i have 2 80s on the side, one intake one exhaust. (i also have 1 80 inside creating a mini tornado ) just the configuration dropeed a couple of degrees for me

well, it could also be your ambiant room temps, i notice my lil cubby for my computer (in the desk) gets much warmer temps when my ac is off, but cooler when the ac is on... might also wanna dremel out the grates in front of your fans and replace with smaller grates..... more holes, also try out rounded cables cuz they create more airflow
BTW, dont forget that too many fans can eliminate the effectiveness of other fans by creating too much turbulence within the case

thats some wonderful advice

Even tho I don't agree thats the right advice, it may not be totally wrong either, you might need a bigger case. Just depends on the size of your current one and amount of current components. Adding more fans will make it noticeably louder. I'm not sure how many fans you have now But adding 2 extra 80's will be a bit more extra sound. I'd say go with the 120 in the side blowing in and maybe adding a fan to the top blowing out. A single 120 should move about the same amount of air at less rpms so it will be a little quieter.

one other way to promote better cooling if you don't already have one is a psu with dual fans. But no matter what you do keep in mind your case temps are relative to your room temps so cooling the area around the case is also going to be necessary. My temps go up or down almost 5*C when its hot/cold in the house.

i would put a 120mm blow hole and it also would help if you put a hole or fan in your desks "cubby" hole i did that im my fathers desk and added a 120mm fan . his temps went from 52*c idle to now runnin UD at full load at 48*-50* full load

120mm fans are good, they move lots of air without a lot of noise. I think your biggest problem, though, is the cubby hole as Sam stated.

You flame me then agree with me...kinda hypocritical...

120mm fans aren't necessarily loud...it depends on what you get. I have a 30dbA fan that pushes 80cfm ... that's more air and less noise than MOST 80mm fans (you won't find a 80mm fan that can push much more air than that...or one that can push hardly ANY air at less noise than that)

I've seen Delta fans though that are over 50dbA and push 130CFM

I agreed with the fact that it might help but its still not good advice...not every problem can be solved by saying go buy something different. The point is if your going to post something and give advice make it some advice that's useful.

why not just post that ingfo to begin with and then he'd have good advice and not a just go spend alot more money and buy a different case you don't even know what type of case he has.... oh and BTW aluminum cases don't dissipate heat any faster than steel cases. There is no difference at all in the cooling between the two. Its a marketing gimmick that has been tested and disproved

anyways back to the topic...fans are not created equal. Some are 2-3 times louder than others it depends on the quality of the fan and the rpm's its running. Most of the time a 120mm fan running at 3k rpms blowing 50cfm will be quieter than 2 80mm fans running at the same speed blowing 25cfm
