Gaming Problems
I have been having difficulties playing games on my computer lately. I really do not do much gaming, but I have been in the mood lately and my problem is annoying me. The computer used to play Warcraft 3 well but something has happened and the main menu is now a scrambled mess – no distinction. Also, I downloaded America’s Army and was looking forward to that also…basically the same thing. It has been like this for probably a month (gaming is not a necessity and I have been rather busy) and I would really like to fix the problem.
Here are my specs:
Athlon 1600
Epox 8KHA+
Radeon 7500
Win XP
The newest video card drivers have been reinstalled and did not change anything (the newest Radeon driver’s were playing the game fine previously). I also have reinstalled the games and played with all the video settings (OpenGL, DirectX, etc.).
What would you all recommend? Thanks.
ILC
P.S. I ran the America’s Army system information utility and it says the game will run on my computer, however, it says my “Video AGP Mode” is not detected. Could this be something?

Hummm.Thats kinda weird. After reinstalling all of that. The only thing I could really think of is reseating the video card totaly reinstall it. But I dont think that will work. Make sure ur bios ivid is ser on agp. But thatw wouldent really matter I dont think.

What DirectX settings did you try and adjust/manipulate? What version of DX are you running?
Tried this yet?
start->run->dxdiag->->test DirectDraw/D3D->

Highlife, no I did not know to do that. Went into the diagnostics and have found out that both the Directdraw and Direct3D tests failed. Getting ready to go to dinner, but will try and reinstall DirectX later tonight. If that fails, should I install 9.0?
Urban…I had already looked at that and everything looks good in the bios.

if you've got 8.x already then it shouldn't matter too much...but it couldn't hurt to reinstall it.
do you have another video card you can try installing?

Video card could be crapping out... it happend to me and took me a long time to figure it out. Run 3DMark and if it hangs on any of the tests then the video card might have gone bad....

Ok, downloaded and installed 9.0, then ran the new diagnostics tools. Directdraw now tests fine, however, the Direct3D 7 test fails giving this response in the Notes box: Code: Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 32 (User verification of Direct3D rendering): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code) Can anyone shed some new light on the problem?

Ok - in dxdiag could you use the "save all information" tab and paste some info from that in this thread for reference? (system->display devices)
more dxdiag fun -> any missing files under DirectXFiles tab? refresh rate set to adapter default under 'more help tab'? Disable DirectDraw and immediately re-enable it. Do the same for Direct3d.
other misc. fun -> run windows update lately? update your via 4-1 drivers maybe? MadOnion?
edit: also try the dxdiag troubleshooter and see what it recommends
