Kids Dual Xeon 2.66Ghz vs. P4 3.2Ghz

Hello I'm new to this board. I've been doing video editing for about a yr. now and would like to move up in the comp world. This will be my first dedicated video editing comp. My work at the moment is producing video for the web and dvds. I've been looking at a couple different workstations. I think I've narrowed my options down to either a 2xIntel Xeon 2.66Ghz 533Mhz FSB or a 3.2Ghz P4 800Mhz FSB both w/ 1gb/266DDR. I'de also Like to stay under $3000 US. I'm going to use my existing hds and monitors till I can scrape some more cash together. I am wondering what would better suit my needs in you opinions, possible advantages/disadvantages to both. Also curious which graphics cards would best suit my needs. Any input you can give me would be GREATLY appreciated.

At the moment I use Adobe Photoshop 7 and Premeire 6.5. I plan on getting a copy of Premiere Pro if I go with the dual Xeon cause it supports dual chip systems. I have not choose a prog for the dvd's yet cause I can not afford the one I want. Still have A LOT of editing to do before I have to worry about that. Plus I need a comp first cause this one is falling apart If this comp goes b4 I buy a new system then so does my job.

Personaly I like dual. You just reallly need to have a program that is muti-threaded if you go that way "premiere Pro"

BTW Thanks for asking. I tried asking on anouther board with a forum dedicated to DVD production. I figured if anyone would know it would be those guys/girls. Got one response and it wasn't even about my question. lol Maybe I came or am coming across as a dick but I don't mean to. This is a matter of remaining employed so I am worried. Ya know? Anyways I could probably ramble all night so I'll shut up now. Later

What is "muti-threaded"? I know what hyper threading is but that is all. I know how to use my software pretty well. I know how to upgrade basic components and the names of most, other then that I am lost.

You will have to use XP pro to get SMP (more than one CPU) support. Dont know about video editing advantages. I like duals and have a couple, the big thing I notice is multitasking seems to be smoother.

And welcome to TechIMO!

Correct,
NT4 workstation 2k and XP Pro support 2 processors as well as Linux

2k and NT server support 4 as well as Linux

2k advanced supports 8

2k datacenter supports 32 I have a screenshot of this somewhere

I don't recall 2003 offhand but I think Web is 2 std, is 4 enterprise is 8.
