Systems Renewing IP problems :(

Hey I'm having a horrible time with my PC. I've had it working fine last year with the dorm LAN connection, but then I move to my friends and try to add my computer to his Motorola Surfboard Cable modem and my computer refuses to find an IP address.

I've tried installing the cable modem, and then plugging only my computer into the modem, no good. I've tried using the USB instead of the ethernet, no good.

When I try to repair the connection, it always comes up with : operation failed renewing IP address. I also tried manually entering in the IP address of my friend's comp as my own (not sure if it'd work, and it didn't).

I'm going nuts about this. I can't seem to figure out what's wrong and the ISP (comcast) is worse off then I am, ("Is the cable plugged in? Are the power lights on?")

If anyone has any advice I'd be extremely grateful.

Welcome to TechIMO

Possibilities...

1. Bad NIC
2. Bad cable (although assuming you're using the same cable as your friend, and he can connect this one maybe able to be ruled out)
3. SOME ISP's (not sure of comcast) are specific what MAC addresses connect. Try swapping out the NIC from his machine and put it into yours.
4. Make sure that when you connect your PC to the cable modem RESET the power on the cable modem before tryign to connect!!
(pull the plug, and leave it be for about 30 seconds then plug it back in)

You are connecting directly to the cable modem which already has a PC attached to it? If so, is there more than one WAN IP allocated to that modem MAC? You may need to buy another IP to get a connection.

Most Surfboard modems allow multiple PC's connected, but each PC needs it's own WAN IP allocated to it.

That might be the issue.

Cheers
