Kids Cannot run GTA Vice on New Computer

Okay, I just bought a new computer. Running 2.6 with 512 ram, and a 64 meg video card. I have installed the latest directx9 drivers as well. I haven't played many computer games for a while, so I decided to pick up GTA: Vice City. The game starts off, and lets me select video resolution etc, but when I go to start a new game it hangs where it says the name of the bar in the bottom right of the screen. The the screen goes blank, and suddenly my resolution is set to 640x480 and I have only 4 colors. I cannot change this in the appearance settings, and I need to restart the computer.

So basically, I can't even get the game to start. I have looked for info on this and have yet to find any reasons. I have tried reinstalling the game as well.

Any ideas? Thanks

My bad. I knew I forgot some stuff.

I am running XP. I bought a new Sony computer, the model number of the computer is : PCV-RS 320. The graphics is onboard (for now, replacing soon), 64 meg , 82865g driver graphic intel extreme. I just fugured that it should work, as you need a 32 meg card to run. I realize that the video I have isn't that great for games, but I thought it would at least play. Even if sluggish.

Thanks again

I've got no experience with vice city on PC do i'm not 100% on its compatability, but I'm not too sure if the intel onboard graphics will be enough to run vice city.

Probably my 1st suggestion would be to check if there are newer drivers for the onboard graphics (should be able to find them on sony & intels website).

I had the same problems when I first started setting up Vice City...I didn't even get into the game before it locked up. There is an update patch to the game that fixes some problems...I bet that would help your problem. It fixed mine!

I installed the patch and now it runs good...hope this helps.

It's probably Video Card drivers issues.!
Try updating your video drivers.!

Thanks for all the help so far. Unfortunuately none of the suggestions have worked. I tried the GTA Vice City patch with no luck. I have also tried reinstalling, and even updated my new video drivers from the intel website with no luck.

It just doesn't make any sense since the game requires a 64 meg card, with directx 8.1 (which I have)

Oh well, thanks anyways.

This is the error I keep getting:

"Windows detected and recovered from a device failure." Then my resolution changed to 4 colors with 640x480, and the only way to fix it is to reboot.

Hmmm...sounds like Vice City may be screwing up your video chipset. Try this: Goto Start>Run (or press the Windows Key + R) and type in dxdiag. Goto the tab marked video, and test DirectDraw and Direct 3d. If that's sucsessful, and you are running broadband, go to www.madonion.com and download 3dMark2001 (not 2003, we don't want to make the poor thing explode now ). Install it and run the demo. If that fails, try running the benchmark.

Oh yeah, WELCOME TO TechIMO!!!

For now, It sounds like it's one of these:

1) The chipset is screwed up on the mobo (worst case). You'd need a new mobo.

2) The drivers from Intel don't work right for some reason.

3) The game doesn't work with yiour chipset, and there is no fix.

4) The game doesn't work with your chipset, but there is a fix (best case).
