Future processors based on 266mhz bus

Here's a question...My Abit KR7a says it supports up to the 1900+ or processors based on the 266mhz bus. Now, the 2400+ is based on the 266, they jumped to 333 with the 2600+.

Abit's site has Bios Upgrades to the 2100+, yet nothing new since 2002...grrr!

Am I going to make a mistake by buying a 2400+ ( the price is right, why not if I can, right?! ) . I'd hate to buy something that won't work right in my system...

Any thoughts?

Just curious, what is the current processor in this system? If it was a significant upgrade or if I was just trying to push the limits of the system, I might be inclined to go for it. The decision ultimately rests upon its feasibility (should work in theory? practice?) and a cost/benefit calculation, imo.

Another question: How often are new bios's released for a motherboard that the manufacturer deems to be discontinued or legacy? It would be nice to know that an official bios would one day be released for 2400+ support (*edit* -> a lot of people are running the 2400+ on the kr7a/kr7a-raid see - KR7a-raid link below).

Last question: Other than raid, what's the difference between the KR7a and the KR7a-raid(<----good read RedFury)?

The kr7a-r supports raid 0 and 1 as I recall; could have higher raid options but I think that was it last time I looked.

Thanks for the linkage. Definetely a good read. My system currently runs a 1600+ which will be going into the wifes system ( ECS K7S5A I picked up for $10 )

I just need to get a kick ass Heatsink, and a few more fans to get my case temps down so I can start kicking some booty with a little overclocking action.....KAPOW!

Oh, and the only other difference is lack of ATA133 support, the RAID boards are ATA133, the Non RAID are only ATA100, AFAIK.

I bought this board for the very idea of being able to push it's limits some day. I'll get some quality Crucial or similar RAM, and a lot better Vid Card ( FX5600? 4600 Ti GF4? Radeon???? ), and start playing my new computer game....Tweak the Bios

It should run the XP2400+ but the BIOS may only recognise it as an "unknown processor 2.0 Ghz".

Well, I went and bought a "poopular" model 1700+ from Newegg

Figured I'd get something to "play" with
