I got back from CompUSA, they charge $99 to tell you what the problem is with your computer.

So, I wanted to try my own diagnostics check, so I took the heatsink off my CPU.. AND GUESS WHAT?! A TAB BROKE OFF THE SOCKET!! NOW I CAN'T PUT THE HEATSINK BACK ON!

I'm going to RMA my CPU and motherboard, I just can't believe this...

BestBuy only charges 60. But they'll give you a wrong answer. I had to go there since my dad didn't believe that my mobo was fried. And the retard at BestBuy ended up telling us to go buy a cpu. Luckily, we went to a shop that let us test the equipment before we bought. And whadya know, it was indeed the mobo.

Yes I'll have to agree, the store probably won't RMA something which you broke.

But if they do let us know, we'll all shop there too. =)

It didn't brake due to lack of knowledge, it broke because a metal clip on a heatsink is bound to brake a cheap little plastic tab after being reseated so many times...

Well why are you needing to reseat this thing so many times?

If you buy a computer from a custom parts place, they will usualy inspect the thing for free. My computer was having some hard times with crashing and freezing due to the motherboard I believed. I brought it in for them to check and they did it for nothing, no cost at all. They found it really was the motherboard doing the problem so they sent the old motherboard in under warranty and I got a new motherboard within a few days. The computer place even installed the thing for me. All they charged was $10 plus shipping costs for the motherboard (which was like $25).

I needed to re-seat it because I put it on without the thermal paste once, just to see if it would fit, took it off put the paste on, put the heatsink back on. Ran it for a few days, took the heatsink off and re-applied the thermal paste because it was getting kind of hot so I decided to re-apply the paste, see if I could get it cooler. Then I ran the system, it was about 5-10 degrees cooler. Ran RTCW, and all hell broke loose (literally).

You don't have to RMA if you've got an AMD board... just pick up a heatsink that uses all three of the socket cleats instead of just one of them.

A good, inexpensive example would be the Volcano 6Cu (not the + model, which sounds like a hairdrier), available from newegg.com for 7.99 and as you can see from the picture, uses all three cleats.
