HP Pavillion Display Problem

LCD display stays on for about 15 min. and then goes black. If you leave computer off for a couple of days the display will work again for 1 min.

Tried using an external monitor and the same thing happens. External display works for a few seconds and then goes black. After screens goes black laptop shuts down.

Any suggestions to what the problem my be?

I've been told its the LCD, but after reading this forum I think it may be something else.

Well since we are talking about a laptop here. Few questions,

Is it still under warrenty?
Have you called the manufactuer about this problem.

Reason I ask if you called the manufacturer is cuz most people don't do fix it yourself laptops at home and usally send it to the manufacturer unless its out of warrenty.

It could be a couple of things, LCD montitor going bad, loose connections, vid card going bad or is faulty.

Do you get any beep codes when you boot up the laptop and/or possibly when the monitor goes black.

What OS and what are your "Power Management" settings?

Sounds like you've got the defaults set to shut the LCD/monitor off after a certain amount of inactivity, and then it goes into Standby after more time elapses.

You might also check the BIOS to see if it has some monitor suspension settings as well. Same w/ standby when power gets low or is inactive.

Well it's not my laptop. It's my sister in laws.

No it's not under warranty. And it was HP who says they believe it's the LCD from the info she gave them. There aren't any beep codes just shuts down.

I haven't been able to see it run fully before the screen goes blank. So I'm unable to check the configuration.

Not the first laptop I've repaired but this one has got me going crazy. It's running Windows ME.

I appreciate the responses. Every bit helps. I may have to wait a month and see if the system stays up long enough so I can look at the configuration.
