Upload a single file to a P2P network, go to jail for five years --

and pay a $250,000 fine. (Here's the bill, courtesy of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.)

Well they won't send you to jail for five years but they will still fine the hell out of the person.

on a computer network acces-

22 sible to members of the public who are able to copy

23 the work through such access shall be considered to

24 be the distribution, during a 180-day period, of at
1 least 10 copies of that work with a retail value of

2 more than $2,500.''.

This makes it sound as if you are only in violation if you are knowingly told that it is illegal to download and you are knowingly illegally sahring files. Correct me if I am wring and thanks for the info Theophylact.

Plus, the poorly written bill sets up an unnecessarily wide dragnet, Schultz said. It criminalizes the placement of any copyright work on a computer network.
So this makes it illegal to take a song that I have written recorded copywritten, and share it over a p2p network?
I think the penalties are a lot out of hand IMO.

The way I read it as long as you are not sharing anything then you have nothing to worry about but like brainchild said he cannot even share his own music, which is a complete load of bunk.

as I stated in my earlier post:

as someone pointed out on boycott-riaa.com, you would have to put 30 million americans in prisons if that law is enacted. Since this law would make it a criminal action, not a civil action, to share files, it would have to be enforced for every known crime of that sort, otherwise it would invalidate the law. So with about 30 million Americans in prisons, I'm sure the rest of the population will have fun paying the taxes.

Well they were referring to uploading files. I am sure they will go after file downloaders later. (They are telling ISP's about them right now.)

Well do you think it matters to them if they arrest someone? They just want to sue and scare people among the ranks. Their squad of lawyers doesn't care, they are getting paid easy money right now.

If it is copyrighted, yes. I don't understand why this would confuse/upset anyone. Just think about it...

If I do something illegal they can punish me? WTH!!!
