Ah. So you just got two drivers installed that wrestle for the same piece of hardware.
Boot to safe mode, open Device Manager, delete everything IDE related, then reboot to Normal Mode and let the system redetect the IDE channels.

great. now i am in a bind. it keeps asking for a floppy disk for drive a: but there is no drive a: just a connection port. the screen is only saying I9990305 now. i think i must have taken that out too because if i remember correctly it was just above the ide stuff.

this thing is toast isnt' it

Who "it" is asking for a floppy drive? Where's it stuck? Be a little more verbose in your descriptions please - you're the only one who's seeing your screen.

Angel when it asks for the floppy drive just click on cancel or the X to get rid of the message.
And no your machine is not toast. Just follow the instructions that Peter gave you to go into the Device Manager via Safe Mode and uninstall the IDE components and then restart your machine. this should resolve the bus mastering problems.

okay, i was in a hurry cause i had to go to work.

time to be verbose.

i went into safe mode, and deleted the items you said i should, but i beleive my hand slipped and deleted something else as well.
when i start up the notebook, i see the thinkpad logo and the ibm logo. then, i see a crude picture of a 3 1/4 inch floppy drive (kinda reminiscent of a trs80) and a picture of a floppy disk with arrows making pointy motions as if to intruct me to insert a disc into the drive. also on the screen it shows squares representing the function keys with the f1 button depressed. if i hit escape, it looks for a disk in drive a:. if i put a cd in the dvd rom drive it reads it and then gives me the a: prompt. if i ask to see any other drive the thinkpad says it does not exist.

when i physically turned off the notebook and turned it back on i decided to try opening the safemode prompt again by holding down the control key. this opened up some sort of diagnostic screen. the wallpaper had thinkpad all over it, and the mouse was a little bird. i hit start and it ran a diagnostic of the systems. memory, sound, display, dvd rom, everything.

but then when i restart the computer, it shows the same prehistoric floppy drive drawing.

okay, forget all that, some how i just fixed it so that it actually boots correctly again.

but the original problem remains.

but there are actually three drivers installed, two of them with the same name, and yes i deleted them all, and yes the computer detected them all and put them right back where they all started... fighting with each other.

it is getting hard to believe that this notebook once worked but it did.

now my friend did tell me that she was trying to play a dvd on her dvd rom drive to watch a movie when the problem started. (or at least showed up). is this relevant at all??

I don't think so. What you saw there is IBM's embedded diagnostics and recovery stuff. SOMETHING's wrong with that thing. Ask IBM please.
