Impatient: No case yet but everything else

Is it safe to put a computer together without a case? I just want to test it and make sure everything is working.

My case isn't coming til next Wednesday. I can't afford to go to my local store and pick up a case. (As the cheapest one is $100)

yes, just do it on something non conductive. like a magizine or something. it should be ok.

unless someone comes up with a reason not to.

people usally take them out of the cases when there is a problem so. go for it.

Safe...maybe not unless you put it on non-conductive material...

You can do it though. I'd just put the motherboard on a cardboard box with the anti-static bag between the box and board.

maybe put some of the components on anti-static bags too

my brother has a computer from old spare parts inside a cardboard box and it runs so I think it should work but if it doesn't please don't sue me

Of course I don't have my case yet so. I don't know what I need to do to turn it on and check the bios.

I put it all together. Motherboard, cpu, heatsink with fan (plugged the fan in), put in video card, memory, connected power supply and plugged in power supply, connected monitor to video card, connected keyboard and mouse.

What am I doing wrong?

ah, you need a switch.

find the power on jumpers and cross them with a small (wide enough to touch both of them) flat head screw driver. it only takes a quick touch to get it to turn on.
the power on jumpers should be listed in the manual or if you lucky on the mobo.

if all else fails, ... run it up and down the jumper bank. you'll hit the right one sooner or later

*note* i watched my friend do this for weeks beacuse he didn't have a power switch.

A case isnt' really need, unless you're concerned about RFI emissions. I've got a P2 333 running that's mounted to a sheet of lexan. Works fine.

I'm doing the exact same thing. Are you making fun of people who don't have power switches?
