Database design layout program

Does anybody know of a program that will help with creating a database, similar to Visio? I don't need it to be that power full, although it would be nice, but I do need it to be free. Even a trail version would work.

This is just for a small project that I'm working on for my personal use and I don't want to spend $200 on Visio for something so small.

How about for Linux? are their similar program for database designing on Linux? I would perfer a Windows program for now since I don't have a linux box running right now, I am wanting to get on going shortly.

thank for the ideas,
LK

Qball: It is not making any database, he is simply looking for a program that will graphicly let him setup an ER Diagram. Very different thing, and it is database independent. It is the first step in designing any database for any real application.

Don't know of any for windows, but linux does have Dia. It is great and are what I use.

Ah, I thought he was referring to something like the applications listed here:

Yeah, jkrohn has the right idea. But saying I don't have a linux box running right now, I can't use that one. But I will keep it in mind for when I do get a Lbox running.

Now, does anybody know of one for windows?

Look, qball and all. The point is that a lot of us who work with DBs professionally don't even use modeling tools. Databases such as SQL Server really have no need for external db modelding tools, as the relationships digrams fill that need, and are easy to edit in enterprise manager.

Try this

I haven't used it...just came up in a search.

If you can't find anything, you can probably get away with Access and printing the relationships. You don't need to use it as the db, but it will do to give you a mock up of the design.

Yeah, I thought about using Access. However, saying I don't have it were I'll be working on the design right now, it's not a great solution. I would work, but I couldn't work on it was much.

I'm downloading the Case Studio 2 demo. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks for the link.

Well, Case Studio 2 is a pretty neet program. I haven't used it that much, but from what I can tell it's pretty full featured. I'm just using the demo, which limits a few options and the entity number to 7 (I believe), but it should work for what I'm wanting.

If you want the full version, it does cost a bit, about $350. But it would be worth it if I was going into a big production.

I would recommend it.
