Fried 2200+???

Hi, I'm working on a friends computer and I think I've narrowed the problem down to the cpu. It get's no video with either the onboard video or the video card, there are no bios beeps at all unless you take out the ram, then just one long beep. The computer specs are:

MSI MS-6390 motherboard
AMD Athlon 2200+
512mb pc2100
2x WD 20gb Hard Drives

Here's what I've tried so far:

- Reset the bios
- Tried booting without video card
- Tried new AGP video card
- Tried new PCI video card
- Tried new ram
- Tried new power supply
- Tried starting it with nothing but the motherboard connected

Does anyone know what this could be? Or have any suggestions?

TIA

Erik

hmm, well try pulling the CPU up from the socket and looking at the core, if it is chipped, then its toast, also, if it as any burn marks on it or the metal is discolored, then it has be destroyed.

sometimes switching the ram between the slots will give you different results.

is there a 100/133/166 FSB jumper on the board? perhaps you have it set at 166 as the CPU only handles 133 [or lower]

also, try the processor in a system that you know works, thats a great way to tell if a specific part is no longer working.

I took the cpu out and it looks ok as far as I can tell it's not chipped, burnt or anything but the metal is a pinkish-purple color, I'm not sure if this is normal. Also I can't try it in a different computer, seeing as all we have at work is Intel comps, and I don't know anyone else that has an AMD. I cant seem to find a jumper for changing the FSB.

Yeah it was working for about a month, but she says her son reformatted the hard drive and now it's like this, but i don't see how reformatting the HD could be the cause of something like this.

Does it smell bad, when thermal compound gets on the bottom of a CPU, it will fry it internally.
