notebook suddenly only has 16 color capapbilites

my friend has asked for my help with her notebook. she thought maybe it was stuck in safe mode. after looking at it i have discovered it is not in safe mode but instead only has the primative color mode available.

it is a 600E ibm notepad operating on windows me.

she got it as a gift from her bf so she doesn't even have any driver cd's or backup or anything.

this is the most pressing problem with the computer. once i get this fixed i can see if i need more help.

btw, have notebooks that are completely unpluged from the phone jack, and infact off, been known to log on and off the inernet on their own. i had to take her off my buddie list cause it was driving me nuts, and others have been asking her constantly "why did you log on and hang up when i was about to im you?"

Without the phonejack plugged in I don't see how it can log on the internet. The notebook can be scheduled to log on, check the emails (or whatever you want it to do) and log off all on its own. About the screen colors, right click on the screen area, click properties, and choose settings. Change the colors and hope that the drivers were already installed. If not you'll need to get the drivers by downloading or find someone who has it.

i have tried many times to change the properties, but as i said, the better color choices are not available. it lists them, says it has to reboot before the new setting take effect, but when it comes back on, the settins are still set to 16.

all i can guess is either a virus, or she somehow deleted them.
(and i did run norton antivirus from my cd.)

but until i get the color thing resolved i cant even ask aol to help check to see if someone is pirating her login name. for ten seconds at a time. she has even been kicked off her internet connection because "your login name is alread in use"

Click start - run and type msconfig. If normal startup is not the active choice, make sure the system.ini and win.ini are fully checked. If there is something not loading in either one of these, the video driver may not be fully loading.

okay, i have tried to reinstall the driver but it is ignoring it (or there is something esle wrong)

i am getting a rundll32 error in mmsystem.dll which now closes the display control panel.
