clicks when you put it in.... is this a removeable drive, like the
Iomega Zip drive?
To ease any worries you might have:
A coworkers hard disk (Maxtor) in his Compaq Deskpro went bad, it started giving S.M.A.R.T. errors on bootup (the BIOS was set to use S.M.A.R.T. for all drives, is your BIOS set to use SMART?).
I contacted HP via their support webpage(s), I got an email from them which told me what to do; I downloaded the proper utility, ran that utility, the disk was definitely bad according to their utility. Replied via email with the error codes their utility had spit out, HP agreed it was bad. I got a drop ship from them, no further questions asked (aside from a survey a week afterwards).
I had to return the dead drive, though, but otherwise, all was fine.
Oh, and their site stinks as far as defining what you need to do.... you think you have a desktop PC, because it is a Deskpro minitower (a minitower is a design of desktop PC); their website sends you to consumer grade stuff when you select desktop (Deskpro is business grade), because HP redefined the word 'desktop' as meaning 'home class hardware'.
Also, you might wish to skip asking for help in the HP support forums since the forums will only send you to the software links and the support email site after all is said and done.
