After eight kernel package builds and atleast a dozen pints of beer I shall admit defeat for today, can't even get the kernel to boot at the moment.

Oh well, job for tomorrow

I have installed the new module-init-tools package required and made sure that the basic input and output support is built in with;

CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSE=y
CONFIG_INPUT_KEYBOARD=y
CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y

I have also tried building with different versions of gcc. Still no luck. After selecting the kernel in grub I am greated with a black screen and no activity of any sort. This evening I will try removing my framebuffer support and see if any errors are being hidden from me.

Regards

ed

hmm this thread from the linux kernel mailing list suggests that other people are suffering from broken VESA fb support.

Hmm... looks like I might wait till the first release comes out.

In any case I need to wait till the bootsplash and supermount patches get ported to this kernel...I don't really want to have to do that myself!

Yay, it works. framebuffer support was indeed broken, removed it and it boots with no major problems. Now I just need to fix a few bits and pieces like support for one of my nics.

Well its all up and running;
Code:
Slacker:/tmp# uname -r
2.6.0-test1
However I had to hack the nvidia driver about a little (some easy steps documented on the web) and my USB2.0 driver seems to be having issues (works but sometimes stops boot). Everything else seems good so far except the lack of framebuffer.

<edit>
Well I fixed USB2.0 support and also got my digital camera working. Pornview also works again now (was hanging under 2.4.21-ck3 on vid card detect). Next job is to clean some of teh extra junk out I added, recompile with gcc 2.95 and attempt to get framebuffer working again.
</edit>

Regards

ed
