Problems with high monitor frequency and V-sync (OpenGL)

V-sync is when the monitor and graphics card syncronize to the same speed to make the picture look good and smooth. The problem is that when I set the frequency of the monitor to be 85hz and the FPS of the game matches it at 85, the picture is all choppy when I rotate or move around. Even at 75hz and matching 75 FPS, the game will be choppy.

Does anybody know how to fix this? Yes I do realize that my eyes cannot detect a difference between 60 and 85 FPS. The idea is that the game I'm playing has a few features that rely on client frames per second and I can get it up to 85, I would have an advantage.

GeForce cards have a refresh rate issue with NT/2000/XP, if you're running any of those.

You better believe your eyes can tell the difference. Unless you're nearly blind.

How does it look with v-sync off? Have you tried that. Having v-sync on doesn't necessarily mean it's going to look better.

If I take V-sync off, it looks absolutely terrible. The monitor will run at 60, 75 or 85 FPS (whatever I set it to) but the graphics card will run at 100 FPS.

Well, you DO understand that fps in a game are not going to be constant. Only way to have smooth, constant fps is to be capable of getting really high fps, like 120+, then limit the displayed fps to something like 60 or 75 by using v-sync. And even then it may still dip down under those levels occasionally.

Exactly what game is this?

Exactly what video card is this?

Exactly which drivers are you using?

If you'd like there to be even a chance of someone helping you, then you need to cough up some info.

Hi,
I must agree with outpatient here ... there is a big difference for me.
