2 Should be easy questions!

Okay first question I have a old computer and I was going to use it as a server for a online game I play but It just won't seem to show any sign of life when I hit the power button.. I have opened it up took out the small battery then popped it back in.. Looked at the cables.. Not sure which to look at but they seem fine any suggestions?

Next question is my newer computer is a gateway and in a little while (about a year) I will be doing there trade-in thing.. Where they give you money towards a new computer.. Is there any way that I can delete files so they couldn't recover them without wipeing the drive... I would but I would have to reinstall tons and don't know how to install windows really... Any suggestions?

Howdy, welcome to techIMO!

The old PC - does it have any fans in it (including power supply fan). If so, do any fans come on when you press the power button? Any lights flash anywhere?

Is there a switch on the power supply, and is it on?

Not sure what else we can do unless you can give more details of the old PC - CPU, motherboard, etc.

For securely removing files, the freeware SuperShredder works well.

Cheers
Mick

You should remove any software that is not completely legit if you have anyof that on your machine, prior to selling it. I think gateways come with an image disk to revert it to shipping condition. I would reccommend you do this as it is easier and more thourough than trying to delete independant files.

Might be called a recovery disk. It contains the windoze files and can reinstall the operating system on your machine.

No power sounds like a power supply prob. BTW, don't play with the voltage switch on the back, as you can kill the power supply if you do. Where are you? If in the US, it should be set to 110V I think. (NB you should change your location - the mods are a bit hot on using location for anything other than where you live... )

Cheers

Do you have the cd's that came with the computer? well there should be a restore disk or a system disk among them.

Easiest way is to get a known, good, power supply and change it.

There is a way to test a power supply when it's not hooked up to the mobo, but unless you are handy with electrical stuff I wouldn't suggest it. Could be a shocking result!

Can you get hold of another power supply to fit it? Is it AT or ATX?

Cheers
