go to the Volume Control (usually in the system tray) ... check the CD Audio volume setting...could be all the way down.

There should be an audio cable running from the back of the rom to the sound card. Without that the only way to hear the audio cds is to plug in your headphone to the jack on the rom.

Actually i havent bothered with one of those cables for ages. most disk drives can handle digital extraction of music and this means that you dont need a cable. I think the option is either in the device manager under the device properties or in the sounds and multimedia section of the control panel somewhere.

Agreed, I dont even remember the last time I used one. I have a bunch of them in my pieces/parts box. My bet is on a volume setting somewhere.

It could be that the drive isn't setup to read audio digitally.

Control Panel > System > Device Manager > CD-Rom/DVD Drives > Select Drive > Properties. Make sure the "Enable Digital CD Audio" box is selected. Hit Okay and restart if prompted.

I've NEVER bothered with those cables...the only thing they do use prevent the cpu cyles being taken to play...the sound card will handle it instead if the cable is connected

Systems

Tried all those things and still nothing :S

Could it be that my mobo has onboard sound but i'm using a pci sound card and disabled the onboard, and the sound plug from the cd rom drive plugs into the mobo not the sound card??

You just found your problem. The sound plug should go to the card.

By the way, that's the cable I was talking about.
