I recently re-installed all the software on one of my machines. Now I'm having problems with the resources dropping to 0% free in 1 or 2 hours of use. Prior to the re-install it always ran great. Any ideas? [Please skip the WinME bashing] System specs below.

Netscape 7.1
Norton AV 2003
MS Office 97

Task Box displays the following:

CCapp
onetouchman [scanner]
winhlp32 [why is this here?]
winmgmt [why is this here?]
Rnathchk
Bcresident [encryption program]
systray
Nprotect [Norton AV]
e_sicn03 [Epson printer]
winampa [Winamp]

Try ending task on each one of those one at a time unitil you find the culprit that leaking mem.... Unless you scan all the time every day there is any sense in having the scanner load up.

The problem seems to occur while running Netscape. Prior to the re-install of everything I used Netscape 6.2 but since the re-install I've gone to version 7.1. All of these other items running were here previously and didn't cause any problem. I just found an article on the web that talks about memory leaks in Netscape caused by the memory cache being set to high. Anyone have experience with this problem?

I believe I've found the solution to my problem. It is indeed a severe memory leak in Netscape 7.1 that also affects Mozilla 1.3 and 1.4. It seems the default installation of Netscape sets the programs memory cache to high, causing the leak. To correct the leak you need to edit the file user.js located in C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

Add the following line to this file with a text editor and save.
user_pref("browser.cache.memory.capacity", 2048);
