DVD problem - software or hardware?

My son's DVD R/RW has stopped playing movies. At the selection menu where you choose play, trailers, etc. it freezes.

Music CD's still play.

He's not sure when the problem occurred as related to any software installations. The original software that came with the laptop is WinDVD Creator Plus. He recently installed Roxio EZ CD/DVD Creator.

I would think that if it were a hardware problem music CD's would not play either.

Do I have a software conflict here? Should I uninstall both programs and reinstall only one?

Or, is there something else I'm missing here?

I would uninstall the one you recently installed and see if that helps if it does and you really want the software that you uninstalled check there website for updated patches maybe it just has compatibility issue with that drive. it most likely be a software problem then a hardware good luck

Software issue without a doubt. Nero 6 (just released) does not get along with Easy CD 6--each causes the other to lose control over the default burner.

Just to confirm, uninstall Easy CD and check as advised above. Easy CD is a better application than WinDVD so I'd uninstall that and reinstall Easy CD 6. There are some patches for Easy CD on the Roxio support site.
