DOS "Edit Command" ??Anyone know??
Does anyone know where I can get the DOS Edit Command and how I can put it onto a floppy and use it from a non-bootable computer. I have boot-discs and I can get to a cammand prompt, I just need the EDIT command and instructions on using it. Thanks! This would help me greatly..
Also, I do have something that I think is what I need, but it is just a .exe file or something that runs when I click it, and runs while windows is running.. I need it for DOS. Thanks..

Here's Edit.com from Dos 7. It should work for ya. Just put it on your boot floppy. Edit.com (right-click and save as...)

You could also use the Edlin command although it's not very easy to use. But at least it should already be available to you if you're at a C: prompt. Using Edlin |

Is there any command I need to type in at the prompt to run the EDIT program?

If you put that edit.com on the floppy, then to run it all your need to type is edit.com or if you're not at the A; drive already, just type a:\edit.com
Once the edit program starts you can do file open and find whatever file you want to edit.

Is the file your trying to edit on a NTFS partiton? If not, edit.com isn't going to help.
What is the name of the file and where is it?

Steve's right about. If you're trying to get to files on an NTFS formated drive then it ain't gonna work. What operating system does this non-bootable system normally run? If it's WinNT, WinXP, or Win2000 then you'll probably need to seek a different solution.
However, if it usually runs Win98/me/95... then you should have no problem.
BTW, I just tested that edit.com file myself on a bare bones boot floppy and it works perfectly. See attached image to see what all was on my boot floppy...

I am now able to open the file I need (Boot.ini) and edit it as I need to, but after editing it to what I found on the internet to be examples of what it should look like, I still get an error in Boot.ini and then one saying Hal.dll is missing or corrupt. I am able to find Hal.dll, so is there some way I can edit it, or maybe replace it. Also, could someone tell me exactly what the boot.ini file should look like with 1 operation system (Microsoft XP Home Edition)
