Misc DVD to hard drive or VCD?

I have a couple of dvds I want to back up to either my hard drive or to VCD. I have no VCD software or dvd burner yet and I was curious what the best and or easiest VCD converting software is and whether or not I can do this legally with my dvd's I have purchased. Please help Evildead fanatic needs backup.

EViL DeaD, yeah baby.

Well, I use Gordian Knot available at www.doom9.org, but I wouldn't call it EASY. Though it does a BEAUTIFUL job of turning my DVD's into CD size DivX AVI's. I only play with SVCD when I'm messing with my DVD episodes, as I don't like to put more than 45 minutes on a SVCD as the quality quickly goes downhill.

There's no direct link to GKnot as their site is a bit different, but go there and follow the following path: "GUIDES", "DIVX"...

umm, it's in there somewhere...and the site is down right now, so I can't get the exact path. But look around, you'll find two downloads for Gknot, one codec pack one program pack. Follow the guide to get started, hit the forum for troubleshooting. It's all freeware (cept the DivX pro, which is adware supported, but I find it worth it until you get the cash for the ad-free version which is only $20 right now).

If ya have a cd-rw that's all you need other than a DVD drive of course, to burn them right on a VCD/SCVD that will play in a standalone DVD player

Here's an alternative. Rip the files from the DVD to the hard drive. I use Smart Ripper myself. Then I use a file splitter program, that splits the DVD chapters in half. This makes it possible to put each half on a standard CD. Now they are backed up, and there is no loss in quality. To view them, rejoin the files back to your hard drive. Obviously, you can only view them on your computer, and you also lose most of the menu options. Not a total solution.
