Outdoors Can't install plustek scanner driver

My friend's just got this plustek 1268u usb scanner and tried to install it himself and couldn't do it! So he called me. When I got there everything looked allright except the Plustek usb scanner under device manager had a yellow exclamation on it! Anything you try to do that uses the scanner you get a message saying Windows can't connect to it! I tried removing the scanner from the device manager and uninstalling all software related to it, then reinstalling all over! Windows won't detect it automatically anymore like it did the first time the scanner was plugged(according to my friend). I also tried installing the driver manually. but whenever I do it, it askes me to choose a port! ie: COM1,LPT1... and it's an usb scanner!!!! So I choose a port anyway becasuse I'm forced to and it installs with the yellow exclamation on it! So, I guess the only thing missing here is a proper driver installation! The scanner is unlocked, cables are well attached! his usb port works because I tested a digital camera on it! Please help! Thanks in advance.

OS: Windows ME
PIII 750 mhz
128 RAM

Wow. I have that same exact problem with a USB camera. For the life of me I can't get it figured it out. Hopefully someone here can come up with a solution to this problem.

Is there anything else USB that works with this computer ? If not, then maybe the USB drivers need an update.

Uninstall everything related to the scanner, then unplug it, download the latest driver from www.plustek.com , then plug the scanner. When it asks for a driver, direct it to your downloaded (and previously unzipped) driver.

If I remember correctly, Plustek scanners ask for a serial number located on the scanner's back when it installs, so type it right.

As I said before, I already tried a usb digital camera and it worked allright on the same PC! So it's not the usb driver's fault I guess. I'll try your suggestion downloading a more recent driver and see if I can install it! Hope it won't ask to select a non-usb port like the current one that comes with the CD! Thanks.

Also try plugging the scanner directly into a usb port on the computer and not thru a HUB. I have seen expansion hubs cause problems with scanner and camera several times.
