new system no go
I also posted this under motherboards maybe it should have gone here. Hoping someone can help. Just put together mobo ep-8kta3l+ w/AMD 1.4ghz, 350w/ps (generic) PCI radeon 32 mb vid card. I used the pci even though mobo has agp because customer had it already and I did not know it.. 256 mb pc133 name mem. 30 gig wd hdd.( has win95 installed on it (i was going to fdisk if i got boot),dvd, cd rom, fdd. Prolbem, boot up nothing, no beeps, no vid. Will not go to bios nor does it seem to post. what I tried so far, loading w/ only vid card, hdd, floppy drive. switched out mem w/ known good stick, changed out vid card w/ my agp rage pro128 and still nothing. I have the right kinda heat sink and cooler w/ arc greese, don't think i broke cpu when I installed it Any ideas?
Thanks
Sterling

I am getting ready to pull it out of box and try that, dont want to pull cpu, but will if I have to , however I don't have one to put in it.

I suggest you basically take everything apart, place it on an anti-static sheet (or a piece of wood), and then carefully place everything back on the mobo, piece by piece. I had the exact same thing happen to be.... my problem was with the cpu though (it wasn't properly fitted in). I really doubt it has anything to do with your PSU.
For the moment, try to load with only ur vid card, memory and cpu.
No hdd, no floppy. You'll be able to get into the bios with just those components. If you're really fortunate, you'll have a spare mobo + cpu to swap around as well, so that you can really identify which piece is causing the problem.

Just connect the following to the motherboard!
Power Supply!
Ram!
CPU!
Heatsink And Fan!
Make sure HS Fan is connected to the right header!
Video Card!
Power Button Wire!
Speaker Wire!
Clear The CMOS!
Put the CMOS jumper to the enable position!
Plug in the monitor to the video card!
Plug in the AC cord!
I think that's it!
And let er rip!
Good Luck

Oh oh oh... heh... when I meant cpu in my previous post, I did also mean the heatsink + the thermal paste/thermal compound! heh...
Scared me for a bit, I was reminded of a post I saw on my mobo's forum where a nice young lad was brave enough to run an athlon xp 1900 without a heatsink or a fan...
(by accident... of course) |

Thanks people good advise, and I was pretty much following that. Don't worry Sammy, I knew you meant to reinstall heatsinl/fan. I am not up and running yet so if you read this please check back as i will post either way what happens. I took the pcu and mobo back to Frys as I figured it was one or the other, and I was not going to take out my 1.4 on my personal machine. Too lazy i guess, and notr the first time frys has sold me dead stuff. Get this. Turns out the cpu was dead as the tech dept. got nothing on checking it. They looked at me funny like somehow they just knew I did it. When I got that first chip home I could see w/ maganafine glass it had been out , traces of paste still on it. Ok so I put it in anyway. When they gave me the new one I look at it the same way and it also had traces of old paste on it. They said it was good for 1yr, i said fine but i want it checked out first. They said ok and guess what yep it too was dead. They clamined they had only one more.

It too had been out as the same thing old paste. However this one worked, so I am getting ready to put it back together and see what happens. I also had them check out the mobo while I was there, and the mem stick(256mb)Name.One more story please. This computer I am buliding is for a person that took her old compaq 233MHZ to Best Buy for an upgrade. compaq Per.4540. They sold her a new wd hdd 30GIG, radeon32mb PCI video card, and a new DVD player. She had 32 mb ram and when I got it it still had 32mb ram. Don't know if they sold her more ram or not, its a funky ram with 2 different kinds of mem banks on it. Any way she told them it was for her son and he plays a lot of games on it. Am I crazy or do you see like me that selling her that knowing she is stuck w/mobo and a slow 233mhz is just wrong and taking advantage? please check back to this post in case i need some more help. Thanks Sterling

When you go to any computer store you have to be very specific about what you want to upgrade or you will wind up like your friend!
They will just look in your machine and upgrade anything that they can upgrade quickly!
You said upgrade! They say well it's been upgraded!

Thanks for the reply Speedo. You are right, in a tech way it has been upgraded. I run a small a/c and heating business, and while I am no angel, I do not sell what does not need selling, and as a restult I have had the same customers for over 15 yrs. What I don't understand is how HP Compaq, Best buy etc... do it and stay in business. Oh well mine is not to wonder!! Well I just put it together and I am in BIOS. That is one of the best high's for me is to kick it up and it go like it is supposed to. Been up 14 MIN's w/ a cpu temp of 37 C and sys temp of 24 C. I will burn it a while then do the fun part. My v core is 1.79,( 1.4 Ghz 1.75V) but i guess that wont be a prolbem, its on auto detect now the other stats look ok. T birds make me nervous about heat. Going to run it at 133mhz at 10.5, 1396.5. I think she will be happy. Believe it or not, going to get win 95 off of hdd. I am surpised they did not sell her win98 Being how XP would not go. Thanks for the help. Sterling
