Camcorder to VCD help needed please.

I guess thats an accurate thread title.

Funny, I was just musing about Video and TV computer recordign solutions the other day...and today I make a housecall on a guys comp...while Im there he says he wants to get a new comp...cuz he has all this footage on 8mm tapes from his camcorder.

So the entraprenuerial wheels started turning in my mind naturally. I asked to see his vidoe camera and it has an S-video out port.

So basically what I need to know is, if I order a card like this one http://www.leadtek.com/multimedia/wi..._deluxe_1.html is tha basically all I need to record his video onto a hard drive and then onto vcd's? It comes with these software's----- >

Provide full version of Ulead Video Studio 6.0 and Cool 3D 3.0 for Video Editing and VCD/DVD/SVCD Authoring.

So here is my plan. I am going to order this video card..set it up on a comp here at the house and then invite the guy to come over (he only lives a block away) and download some video and then burn it onto a vcd for him.

What kind of processing power will be TOTALLY sufficient for the job?? I think I have an XP1600 that I can build...if I put that on an ABIT KG7 with 256 DDR surely that will do the trick, yes??

What is the most processor hungry part of all this...is it capturing or is it in the case of converting from one filetype to another??

Say he has a ten minute video....how long will it take to get it from camera to vcd? How many vcd's would that be??

Anyway, thanks for answers to all or part of these questions...this is a good chance for me to make some ca$...I mean, uhh, to help out a neighbor, yeah thats what I meant, lol.

Thanks, JP

Converting will be the most processor intesive part.

Here is a link that addresses exactly what you want to do.

These guides desribes how to capture video to VCD, SVCD or DVD that can be played on almost all standalone DVD Players using different types of capture cards and methods.
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/capture.htm

How much video you can fit on one VCD will depend alot on the quality you set it at. The guide will do alot better explaining than I can.

Nothing wrong with making some cash if you are doing the research and putting up the hardware.

Thanks. Those guides seem to be the ole' 7 freeware progs needed etc. I suppose that the software that comes with this Vid Card would do the same thing in one or two steps? Hafta remember we are talking average users here...not power user/hacker/techno geeks. As in target market of retirees with disposable income and lotsa films of grandkids, lol.

I just noticed that the card I listed isnt really a vid card per se cuz it doesnt have vga output etc..then I guess I shulda noticed it was a pci card.

So I guess if you have a nice gaming rig/card that this wouldnt interfere somehow with your rigs' gaming ability?

link to card in question http://www.leadtek.com/multimedia/wi..._deluxe_1.html
