Outdoors Web page(s) suddenly blocked!

Ok, so here's the problem:

Customer has a new system which was frequently getting disconnected. I checked out, and he told me that the same problem frequently occured with his old computer. He is using FidNet in Bourbon, Missouri. I told him he needs to notify FidNet as they may be able to help him, or his lines in the house may need replaced. He tells me he had a brand new line installed to the computer room two years ago when he first got his computer & internet service with FidNet to try to resolve the problem then. So, the issue is definately with the external phone lines or on FidNet's end. He calls them, they tell him "get a new modem...a Lucent one will probably work better since that is what we use...". Neighbors get reliable connections at full speed, so phone lines are likely not the cause.

Well, it's a brand new modem of course, and I've seen this modem actually maintain 56K with quality ISP's. But anyway, they give him a string to add to his modem's properties to limit it's connection, at 33.3 I think. The string is: "+ms=v34,1,0,0" and this is in his extra initialization commands.

NOW, he does not get disconnected as before, but of course he is slowed to a crawl. But here's a real kicker: now certain websites no longer load. One example is Classmates.Com. It was working fine until the string was put in his properties. So remove it, right? No go. String removed, problem still there. A page not found error would pop up when trying to load the page. I tried a huge list of things, of which I will try to remember:

Installed a couple new web browsers, cleaned cookies & temp files, uninstalled McAfee software, adjusted security settings all over the board....

Anybody have any ideas what has happened?

Hi -

Which modem(model) does this person have? Make sure to try the latest drivers and firmware for it if you haven't already. You are right about the <34kbs connection speed as the string "+ms=v34,1,0,0" set it from presumably v.90 levels to definately v.34 levels.

Couple of other things I am not sure about but I think drivers and firmware might be a good start.

Hope that helps!

Locate the HOSTS file (no extension) in this folder:

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc
Hmmm...wonder if that's where it's at...
