DNS server ip DSL modem HELP!

Okay, I have dsl. I have a dynamix (changing IP).

Whenever I want to play a game (let's say Diablo) I goto "make a server" and it tells me my IP for convienence. 172.168.0.1 WRONG! After 3 days of wondering why nobody can connect to my game is because that is my local ip and not my (external?) ip. So I head over to www.whatismyip.com and it tells my the real one.

So my DSL modem asks like a router right? It takes the external ip and then gives me taht local 172.168 one? There HAS GOT to be a way to tell windows XP to use the EXTERNAL IP. Right? I'm looking through all of these config windows and it seems like windows is capable of doing it; I just don't know how.

I know the IP address of my modem. When I go there it shows me a page of useful stuff like DNS servers, my true WAN IP address so I don't have to go to whatsmyip anymore.

If windows can't do it, is there a program? Something. I would like window's IP to be my real ip. When my real IP changes, so does the windows one.

Thanks

You need to find out the ports used by that game and setup port forwarding in your routing settings for those ports. Then it will work.

Not that I know of, besides it isn't your actual problem.

As for them actually connecting to your games (regardless of IP or by host name) it sounds like you need to forward the appropriate ports like meese explained.

As for knowing what your public IP address is, an easy solution is get a free account at http://www.dyndns.org and a 3rd party utility that auto-updates your IP information for the HOST name you created. Then when you want friends to connect to you, they just use the FQDN you created at DYNDNS.org and you don't have to lookup your public IP address.
