Networking 2000 and XP

I have XP Pro on my desktop. i have also have a laptop running windows 2000.

I tried to set up a home network (ethernet cables) so that the laptop can share my DSL connection (which is connected to the desktop via USB).

Ran the network setup wizard on XP and everything was fine. Told me to restart and run network setup on laptop. Laptop has no CD drive so I chose the option to make a floppy containing netsetup.exe

Double-clicked netsetup.exe on the laptop (from the floppy) but it says that it only works on 98SE, millenium or XP!!! Why not 2000?!

Anyways, I can't figure it out without the netwrok connection wizard and can't find a similar counterpart on 2000. Please help!!

As far as you are concerned, is the Desktop now ready to share the internet on the network?

If so, then you can setup the 2000 machine manually...

Firstly, in XP:

Right click my computer, and select properties - network tab. Take a note of the workgroup name.
Load Command Prompt, and type 'ipconfig /all'
Take a note of the IP address (likely to be 192.168.0.1)

Go over to the 2000 machine. Right click my computer, properties - network tab, then select properties. Type in the workgroup name.
Now, right click on network places, and select properties. Do the same for the local connection. Open the properties for TCP/IP, and type in the IP address of 192.168.0.2 (assuming my above was correct), subnet 255.255.255.0. The default gateway is the address of the XP machine. Restart.... and you should be on your way...
