As far as you are concerned, is the Desktop now ready to share the internet on the network?
If so, then you can setup the 2000 machine manually...
Firstly, in XP:
Right click my computer, and select properties - network tab. Take a note of the workgroup name.
Load Command Prompt, and type 'ipconfig /all'
Take a note of the IP address (likely to be 192.168.0.1)
Go over to the 2000 machine. Right click my computer, properties - network tab, then select properties. Type in the workgroup name.
Now, right click on network places, and select properties. Do the same for the local connection. Open the properties for TCP/IP, and type in the IP address of 192.168.0.2 (assuming my above was correct), subnet 255.255.255.0. The default gateway is the address of the XP machine. Restart.... and you should be on your way...
