Kids Ethernet Cable (Cat5e)

Ok. First this is first. I have made an ethernet cable for a home network of 25 meters... It appears to be connected on the computer it says that the link is 100Mbps, but it does not get an ip from DHCP, and doesnt receive data from the router.

It is 25meters (Cable Length) and I have considered a repeater, but i am fairly sure that you dont need a repeater until the cable reaches a length of 50 meters.

I am puzzed with this situation, and cant remember much from CISCO training. (High School Student Here) I was wondering if anyone could put this puzzle togeather for me.

(On the laptop ethernet adapter lights flash in a certain order. My guess is that it is just searching for the Frequency or something like that.)

There is 4 displays

Display #1:

10/100 - o - off
Half/Full - o - on
Lnk/Act - o - off

Display #2:

10/100 - o - on
Half/Full - o - on
Lnk/Act - o - off

Display #3:

10/100 - o - on
Half/Full - o - off
Lnk/Act - o - off

Display #4:

10/100 - o - off
Half/Full - o - off
Lnk/Act - o - off

That is the sequence of flashing leds on the ethernet adapter for the laptop. and on the laptop also says that it is disconnected.

On the desktop computer as i said before... Says it is connected at 100Mbps but receives no data...

Will someone answer my cries for help.

What kind of router are you using?
Does the router provide DHCP services?
Have you tried connecting directly to the cable/dsl modem?

Maybe try goign into the adapter settings in windows and taking the 10/100 setting from manual and set it to 10mbps for testing.. then set duplex mode from Auto to FULL.

Then from command line type 'ipconfig /renew'

Hello there!

How is the home network set up? Is it a PC-to-PC connection, or is there a hub or router in the way? How is the DHCP set up?

Sounds to be a faulty cable. Do you have a way to test it? Have you run winipcfg on the lappy so it can find the DHCP server? If after you release/renew and it still doesn't find the router's IP then I would say it has to be the cable or NIC.

Router: Netgear RP614 4-Port Switch and Router
DHCP Enabled.
Tried connecting it to the modem directly just then, the modem says that it is sending data but do not receive it on this end of the 25 meter cable.... I think it might be that the signal isnt strong enough. What do you think?

We have tested the cables and it works on the tester. We've even tried the cable modem... It sends the 5volt connection signal, but the TXD RXD signal cant be strong enough over 25 meters.... That is the only logical explination.

How have you tested the cable?

we used the cisco diagnostics hub which tests the cable by sending an electric current from one end to the other. and then the LED lights up ok... "CISCO RJ45 Diags Hub"
