Linux is free.... hence more people run Linux on their home computers than Unix.

Welcome to TechIMO!

Well, I have used several POSIX operating systems over the years. BSD, Solaris, BeOS, QNX, and probably a few System V oddities I can't remember anymore.

Honestly, with most Unix operating systems lacking qualtiy driver implementations, you will find the majority of end-users here use Linux because they tend to have cutting-edge hardware in their personal systems.

Well thats what you get for not being most home office users eh? i run a hosting bussiness, i host games, websites, and chatrooms plus DNS, and quite frankly i wouldn't really concider using linux for that kind of work... ever. Unix is more, robust and powerfull. Plus it takes full advantage of multiple processors much more than Windows or Linux..

As Rob noted, most Unices won't really install too well on normal PC's as they're more tuned towards server hardware. FreeBSD I imagine is OK for PC's but still a bit shakey.

Also Linux is the only *nix that has any real chance for gaming at the moment.

You have to realize the bulk of the users here at TIMO are people working on their home PC's.

Actually, as of late, Linux has developed a superb multi-threading model for increased processor utilization with scalable processing solutions, and the near future 2.6 kernel will deliver much improved n-way scalability among a long list of enterprise features. Not to mention Linux delivers superior virtual processor and simultaneous multi-threading support.

If you want to get into the technical side of the details, actually BeOS offers a superior processing model (IMHO) for systems under 8-way SMP as compared to either Linux or traditional Unix implementations.

yah want technicle... I have a self-moded version of Unix, I use it on 4 different servers, and I am running over 40 parrelel processors... we tested this with 3 different versions of linux and it was horrible. we made changes to linux and it still wasn't very good... (this was quite recently) we also tried it with unix and it wasn't that bad... after quite a few days of HEAVY recoding and some adjustments to my processor setup, its quite amazing... *shrugs*
