Kazaa Lite crashing Explorer in XP

I downloaded another copy of Klite the other day. This version was one newer, but there was no Kazap, and a few other minor differences. Since this one has been installed, Explorer keeps crashing on me. It will run all day and all night without a problem, but if I browse my drives, Explorer will crash, often immediately. A reboot will shine her up well...

I think I'm going to uninstall it now, and put the previous version back in...

Keep P2P alive! Even legally it is essential! We don't need places like download.com or other servers who want to sell our email adds to every Tom, Dick, & Harry for cash. We can supply our own files.

That's interesting. I use Kazaa Lite under XP Pro with no problems. If you want to keep using it (and it sounds like you do), install it with the minimum number of components it needs to run. That means no SpeedUp or whatever, which does nothing anyways.

Have you tried running a virus scanner on your machine? I know it's a bit of a stretch but I've found Kazaa to be full of viri.

That's probably not the answer you were looking for but...

If it was a virus, than it would be affecting the computer as a whole, not just when you accessed Kazaa. You should still have a virus scanner running at all times, backed up by a good firewall (either ZoneAlarm or BlackICE).

I have BlackIce, but don't even use it. And right now I'm using PC-Cillin, as McAfee kept unloading & disabling (if THAT doesn't sound suspicious), and I sold all my Norton CD's as it crashed one too many of my systems so I gave up on them.

Could be a virus, though...that's definately not ruled out. Though, I wonder if too many shared freeware files is the culprit. Is that far too much for Kazaa to handle? I have more RAM than I need, 512MB, I rarely see my machine use more than 256. Could it have to do with NTFS indexing? I'm new to that, and I can't remember what they told me in school about it.

I did have a problem with PC-Cillin completing a virus scan of my system. Not sure if it's a hardware or software quark, I noted that the system would crash while on a certain directory. This directory was a collection of emulators, just about every one out there, all from Zophar & Mame.dk. I have erased that directory, and now the scan completes just fine. That also removed several hundred files from that drive & kazaa. And I haven't had any of my usual mysterious crashes YET, but I believe they will return as usual eventually.

Now for something completely different.

I've uninstalled Kazaa, and now WMP is having the same effect, though just a hair less severe...

OK... maybe you should think about reinstalling Windows, eh?

maybe not reinstalling windows, but just a repair might do the trick.

I had exactly the same problem with kazaa lite in win xp. I had over 1000 .dat file downloads, so all i did was put most of them in another folder named "Downloads" and kept about 100 in the my shared folder and i havnt had a problem with it since. Hope this helps!

Oh, and uh, I would give Norton another shot. You mentioned that it was crashing, which sounds like what McAffee does. After you do a repair of XP (forgot about that), try the latest version of NAV. I've heard and experienced too many things about McAffee to learn that Norton has and will have the largest virus definition book, features, and support that other companies lack the resources to provide.
