Check connection.
Check cable.
Replace cable.
See if it's recognized by system.

I'm sure others have a more comprehensive step by step analysis.

It won't work if it's no good.

So, what willy posted:

If ya know the cable is good...
If ya know the connection is good....
If ya know the drivers have been set up for the NIC properly...

... then if it don't work the NIC is probably dead. If you replace it with a good one and still no network... it probably is NOT the NIC.

How's that? Help?

Cheers
Mick

The best way to test something is just switch it out and try another one. If that doesn't work then dig deeper.

Unlikely to be the NIC. If they go, they don't usually come back.

How do you connect? Through a modem/router?

Cheers

Might be a dodgy ISP problem. Or I would check the Cat5 cable as well. (Although I am sticking with the ISP theory. )

Follow Willy's advice.

I'd say that if you are able to get on at all then it wouldn't be that. You could always give your ISP a ring!

i connect through MOdem>Router>PC and i used to get disconnected like hell and i called verizon and they said to open the properties for the ETHERNET card and change it from autosense to 10BaseT and it worked, no more disconnects from the modem but now this is going throught the router, also made my internet connection faster, can't see how.

That ain't the cards fault. The NIC is doing the right thing by trying to work out what signal is coming. It's the router and the modem fighting over what kinds signal it is.
