What are your system specs, when did the problem start, do you have another drive you can try, etc, etc...

It started about 3 weeks ago, but I thought it would go away. What system specs do you want to know?

Welcome to TechIMO!!
You didn't say how old the drive is, but CDROM drives sometimes have problems as they get older, because the lens gets dirty, or the laser just gets weak. This usually shows up gradually - certain discs work & others won't.
CDROM drives are generally pretty inexpensive and easy to install, so the best bet is to probably just replace it.

First thing I'd do is find someone with a cd-rom that works and swap it out to determine whether it's a drive problem or something else. It's totally simple, just pull the drive and put another in, the cables and wires are notched so you can't put them in wrong. Xp will recognize the drive, so you don't need to install any software.

Is the computer in a dusty environment? Have you tried using a CD lens cleaner?
