USB modems any good?

I have a customer who has a gateway all in one type machine. Evidently her modem is bad. It is telling her no dial tone and we just had a storm recently.

The gateway has built in everything...and if I remember it only has half height PCI slots (if any). Cant remember exactly but I will look it up.

Anyway, does anyone have any experience with usb modems?

Are they any good?

Any cheap suppliers?...anything like $28-30 shiped would work fine, lol. Saw some on pricewatch but they were outta stock.

What about half height modems? Are they available? Would they be more costly?

I dont wanna sell her something that is going to disconnect every 5 minutes.

Is this for dail-up or DSL ??? US Robotics amkes an excellent moden that plugs into the serial port.

hehe...I already have external modems for serial ports....this is for one of the "advanced" "improved" type computers which does away with passe stuff like serial ports, lol.

She ONLY has usb....afaik anyway. I cant remember whether those comps have some half height pci slots or not.

Ill have to look it up at gateways site.

Anyway, anyone else have experience with USB modems??

I don't know about dialup usb modems, but we use a great number of USB Broadband Modems at work and there is very little difference in the PCI and the USB types.
