IDE Drives/ HDD Drives Problem

Hey all.

I just built a new computer:

AMD Athlon +2000
Shuttle MoBo AK32E Slot A, Bus 266
Ram DDR 512 Mb, PC 2100
Cd Burner
Dvd-Rom
30 gig HDD

The problem was this: I put it all together, fired it up and it said that my IDE drives were messed up and not reading right (primary Master, slaves, etc.) I changed the order in the Bios to HDD, Floppy, CDBurner.
Then it didnt work again, and so i checked the ide cables in the unit. I realized I had put the 40 pin IDE (like a jerk) on the HDD and the 80pin IDE (also like a jerk) on the Burner.

I changed then and then it loaded, but it ran reeeeally slow. Everything booted fine, but it took forever for the IDE drives to load. I finally got to put in XP Pro, but halfway through they prompt you restart, so i did. when it reloaded, what i had installed didn't stay, and it made me reinstall XP from the start (like it didnt register right on the HDD).

It kept giving me this crap, so I changed a few boot things in the Bios, and tried again, same problem. I finnaly just zeroed the Bios and all with the jumper on the Mobo and then everything flew. I installed XP pro from the start and everything was good from then on---

Does anyone know the settings in the BIOS that would have changed why it booted soooo slow? m(10 minutes to take a floppy)???

Anything would help guys---
Thanks

There might be a setting for a delay when accessing IDE devices and such. Memory timing set too slow.

A good rule of thumb is to ALWAYS reset the CMOS on a new build, then go into the BIOS first thing and set it to defualts.

After making sure it at least boots, then go in and tweak the Hell out of it.
