Choosing A Managed Switch

I need to start looking into ways to make our network more reliable. We currently have 18 users that are shooting very large files around to each other (usually 25-300MB in size). Currently we have a wireless linksys router, and several ports on some cheapie 12 port hub. I want to put in a managed switch but I'm concerned about all the neccssary protocols making it through. My associate in Canada has informed me he has had problems with MS switches blocking DNS requests, etc.

My question is what should I ultimately be concerned with in terms of selecting an actual switch and insuring that it is compatible with our current systems. How can you really tell it will work without actually hooking the unit up and seeing how everything works?

Thanks,
Roy

If you are working with a local VAR (Value Added Reseller) they can usually get a demo unit for you to test out. Managed Switches as I'm sure you have found out are not cheap! Thus the need to make sure the right one is choosen. I highly suggest demo'ing several models. I personally use Cisco and 3Com units with great success for both myself and my clients

I'm not working with any other company. I'm in charge of improving the network, and I have the cash to make it happen. I've been looking at some units from Dell that run about $500, which isn't bad at all. But, I want to make sure I make thye right decision. I think you have the best idea going, but that it isn't really an option for me. Does anyone know a good resource on the net regarding this subject?

Thanks for your input,
Roy

I use mainly 3com managed switches, some stacked and others as standalone units. All our high capacity and/or gigabit stuff is Allied Telesyn as its considerably cheaper and works fairly well, although older firmware has some stability issues.
