Upgrading to Windows XP - HELP

My friend would like to upgrade his system from Windows ME to Windows XP. I know there are many different ways to buy XP, which one would he need and how much should it cost? Also, will he be able to do the upgrade without losing data? Or will he need to back everything up?

He can upgade without losing everything, but here's my thoughts: He should back up all he needs and do a format/reinstall of full xp for stability's sake. If he's not wiling to do this, he should still buy the full version because you can upgade with it. Then, when he finally gets tired of all the problems, he'll still be able to do a full install. As for price, check out shahani's thread, I guarantee he has the best price you'll find. Better hurry though, it'll be gone soon.

Trust me, and ask around here, it's better to do a full install, you get your drive to ntfs, all things are fresh, etc. etc.

I say Full.

Quick question. Can you do a complete fresh install with XP Home Edition upgrade, if you have your original Windows 98 CD for verification? I started with a full edition of Windows 95, but have bought the upgrades ever since, because they are cheaper, but I've always done a fresh install and inserted my former CDSs for verification. Just curious if the same is possible with XP Home Edition upgrade version. Thanks!
